Manto Censored by the Sindh Textbook Board

The first session of the series features readings of the expunged portions of Manto’s story, “Naya Qanoon”, and thoughts on its inclusion in the Urdu textbook for Class 12. Censorship is the harshest form of criticism. In this reading, we will attempt to understand the minds of the textbook editors who thought it fit to delete certain portions of Manto’s story that were considered offensive and dangerous.

Caste in Urdu Prose Literature

The second session of the series features readings of passages from Tilism-e Hoshruba, Alif Laila and other Urdu books with a caste bias. This selection of passages from Tilism-e Hosruba, put to writing by Mohammad Hussain Jah in the early twentieth century, Alif Laila, ‘free-translated’ by Pundit Ratan Nath Sarshar, and some later writings will explore caste politics in Urdu literature and recent societal changes.
